The Making of Our JLP Cookbook https://www.jlpelham.org/the-making-of-our-jlp-cookbook/ Sat, 24 Feb 2024 14:41:57 +0000 https://www.jlpelham.org/?p=5501 Photo of "Nurturing Neighborhoods: cookbook,

Buy your copy of “Nurturing Neighborhoods” now!

“Nurturing Neighborhoods,” the Junior League of Pelham cookbook, continues the proud Junior League tradition of featuring time-tested favorite member recipes. With 125 dishes, Junior League history, and a place to document your own best recipes, the JLP cookbook “Nurturing Neighborhoods” is special in many ways. And best of all, it was created specifically to raise funds for a long time to help keep the Junior League’s good work going.

The cookbook is the work of President Amy Platt, who conceived of the idea and ran it start to finish. Here’s her story:

Q: What gave you the idea?

A: I swear this idea has been bandied about every year I’ve been on the board. Everyone was always on board, it’s a great idea, etc and then nothing would ever happen. I got tired of waiting.

Q: When did you really get going?

A: Amanda Star and I were having a conversation last year around March about evergreen ways we could fundraise. This idea has been floating about for a while and I decided to make it happen. Amanda has been my biggest cheerleader and the best person to bounce ideas off of during this process. (Former President) Aileen Dose gave me an enthusiastic yes when I basically told her I was going to do this.

Q: Any favorite recipes?

[DIAD Chairperson] La-Donna Lawrence submitted a recipe for a Jamaican style bread that I can’t wait to try.

Q: Did you look at other Junior League cookbooks across the nation for inspiration?

A: Someone gifted me the NYJL cookbook from the 90s that is a beautiful work of art. I drew from that a lot, as well as my huge collection of cookbooks. I love collecting and cooking for them.

Q: What surprised you/what did you learn?

A: I was surprised by how many different designs I’d cycled through until I landed on the final one. I knew I wanted it to feel like a modern version of something you would find at Grandma’s house, but the amount of trial and error to get there was a lot.

Q: Did you make all these dishes yourself so you could photograph them?

A: I did not make all of them, but I made a LOT! Sometimes I’d beg people for a photo. Other times I’d ask if they could make the recipe and take a photo. On the photo contribution page my list of pages takes two lines!

I just have to send a really big thanks goes to everyone who submitted! It wouldn’t have come to life without them.

You can purchase “Nurturing Neighborhoods” here on the JLP web site or at Flour Power, located in the Four Corners shopping center.

JLP Sustainability Checklist https://www.jlpelham.org/jlp-sustainability-checklist/ Tue, 03 Oct 2023 20:48:42 +0000 https://www.jlpelham.org/?p=5368 JLP’s Sustainability Project aims to strengthen community knowledge, connections, and action in support of environmental sustainability and climate resilience in the Pelhams. In support of this goal, this Sustainable Events Checklist will be used by JLP to mainstream sustainability within JLP’s own meeting and events planning.

Benefits of using this checklist when planning a meeting or event:

  •  Reducing JLP’s costs

  • Promoting social responsibility

  • Minimizing JLP’s negative environmental impacts

  • Supporting local suppliers/ makers

  • Enhancing JLP’s reputation as a sustainable organization

Venue and set-up

☑ Choose a venue that uses resources efficiently and limits its impact on the natural environment, and is close to public transport and/or has bicycle racks.

☑ Offer services such as videoconferencing

☑ When decorations are needed, use reusable ones or ones that can be donated (for instance, via Buy Nothing Pelham FB Group)

Registration, promotion and communication

☑ Use online registration process for attendees

☑ Use electronic communications to communicate with attendees (email, website, social media) to reduce paper usage.

☑ Create reusable, long-lasting signage that isn’t throw away after the event.

If a vinyl banner is created to announce an event, it can be repurposed into many items, including reusable tote bags. Consider working with a local seamstress/crafter and offer the totes as an award / prize at a future event. You can also offer vinyl banners to a local scrap store or Freecycle.

☑ Encourage use of electronic presentations and share on a website rather than print-outs to eliminate waste.

☑ Collect and reuse name tag holders, lanyards, etc.

☑ When printing is necessary, choose recycled content paper and print double-sided. Only print the quantity needed to avoid excessive quantities of unwanted paper.

☑ Promote car-pooling, public transport options, walking and cycling routes to the event.

☑ Educate attendees about the sustainable aspects of the event/ what is in place for good environmental practice.

Food and Drink

☑ Get an estimated headcount of attendees to determine the types and quantities of food. Reduce waste by not over estimating final numbers – do not over cater.

☑ Avoid bottled water, juice or other drinks in single-use plastics. Request/ arrange for tap water or other drinks in pitchers and reusable cups and ask invitees to bring their own water bottle bottles and/or coffee/tea mugs.

☑ Plan menus using local, fresh/seasonal, and bulk food; avoid individually wrapped items. When possible, serve food buffet style rather than in individual box lunches.

☑ Use napkins made from recycled content paper (for example, Seventh Generation) and designate a focal point in advance to collect them for the compost.

☑ Use reusable dishware and cutlery (or request from catering services if possible) rather than disposables. If not possible, use compostable plates and cutlery and designate a focal point in advance to collect them for the compost.

☑ Make a plan in advance for leftover food so it does not go to waste. Encourage attendees to take leftover food home or share with a local food pantry.

Energy

☑ Choose venues with energy efficient measures in place for lighting and ventilation.

☑ Ensure energy efficient lighting and sound.

☑ Consider the local community – diffuse lighting and sound where possible.

☑ Ensure lights, equipment and appliances are turned off when not being used.

Waste

☑ Reduce waste by tailoring operational supplies according to final numbers.

☑ Reduce printed handouts. When you must print, use recycled paper and alway printed back-to-front. Make sure all left-over paper is properly recycled at the end of the event.

☑ Ensure waste and recycling bins have clear signage and are placed in prominent locations. Learn what is and isn’t recycled in Westchester so you can inform attendees.

☑ Use biodegradable trash bags; avoid the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags.

☑ Eliminate giveaways or offer only consumable giveaways, gift cards for local businesses/experiences, and/or local, sustainable made gifts that can be used more than once.

☑ Make informed purchasing decisions. Research and prioritize supplies, equipment and give-aways that support the use of recycled materials and have end-of-life recycling potential.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARDKim Riegel broke the mold with Junior League of Scientists. It started out with the important goal of representing women in STEAM, and culminated in a district-wide initiative to bring science professionals, hands-on projects and STEAM in film to our whole town. We are so proud of you and the legacy of your hard work, and are grateful for the minds you inspired. Congrats!!

FIRST YEAR ACTIVE AWARDAllison Anderson took the JLP mission to improve her community and ran with it! Demonstrating effective leadership and broad collaboration, she channeled her passion for Sustainability into steering a community-wide, action-driven Roundtable. She facilitated JLP’ partnering with like-minded organizations like EcoPel and PEP to maximize our impact. Congratulations to Allison- we can’t wait to see where your new Sustainability project leads!

THE ELIZABETH I. JUNOD AWARD – Melissa Deighton is the embodiment of our organization, and is an overall gem of Pelham. She has not only steered multiple novel nights and served on boards and organizations throughout town, but we could not be more fortunate that she chose us. She represents institutional knowledge spanning over a decade, brought us Wolfs Lane Park, and has guided us as we navigated decisions shaping JLP’s future. Congrats Melissa, well-deserved!
