FOR RELEASE NOVEMBER 23, 2007    WEIHMAN PARK BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT TO BEGIN WITH MASONRY WORK      The Village of Pelham Manor is set to begin construction of the Martha Emmons Weihman Memorial Park Beautification project at the corner of Esplanade and Boston Post Road.  The first stage will be masonry and stonework to rebuild the piers and entranceway on the Esplanade side of the park, with additional improvements to include landscaping and trees, iron benches and receptacles, lamppost lighting, and restoration of the water feature.      Tom Lavin, Mayor of Pelham Manor, said “The Village is thrilled to begin construction on this important project. Weihman Park is at the center of Pelham Manor and its restoration will be a significant enhancement of our public spaces. The Board and I congratulate the Junior League and its leadership for their considerable effort and skill in designing and financing this project.  The Junior League of Pelham worked with the Village on the design and raised more than $245,000 to help bring this green space back to its heyday as a tranquil, tree canopied walking park, circa 1940.  The Village of Pelham Manor is responsible for construction and future maintenance.      “Through the generosity of more than 250 Pelhamites, 3 dozen local businesses, the Edward Weihman Family and the Village of Pelham Manor, this project is proof of our communities’ commitment to preserving its green space and will be a gem of a park for future generations,” said Cathie Arquilla, JLP President.      – more –      The JLP is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.
