Provisional Project – “One Day Book Club” at Amazing Afternoons

The Junior League of Pelham’s 2007-08 Provisional Class project — a “One-Day Book Club at Amazing Afternoons” — was a tremendous success.  This year, the class worked with Amazing Afternoons, an after-school program at the Edward Williams Elementary School in Mount Vernon that serves over 100 children.  The program, a safe place to be after school when some of the children may not have any supervision at the home, teaches literacy, math and other academic skills and provides information on nutrition, hygiene, social skills and more.  Many JLP members know Amazing Afternoons through Kids in the Kitchen, another great JLP project supporting healthy families. The Provisional project was centered on literacy and getting each child started with a “personal library.”  The 27 Provisionals raised money by selling “book plates” (stickers with the JLP logo and an inspirational quote) for $5 each to purchase age-appropriate books for each child in the program.  The stickers were then inserted on the inside cover of the books the sale enabled the Provisionals to buy.  The class raised enough money not only to purchase two books for each child, but to make a significant cash contribution to Amazing Afternoons.  As the culmination of the project, members of the Provisional class held a “one-day book club” at Amazing Afternoons.  Some classes did craft projects related to the books the children received, while others listened to readings and discussed the book.  Of course, milk and cookies were served as snacks.  Both students and Provisionals greatly enjoyed the experience!
