February 12, 2008 Pelham & New Rochelle, NY Over forty Girl Scouts, ages 7 to 10, from Pelham and Pelham Manor spent the afternoon of February 8 at MacMenamin’s Grill & ChefWorks Cooking School learning about healthy eating and preparing meals in conjunction with the Junior League of Pelham’sKids in the KitchenInitiative. The meals were donated to Mt. Vernon-based Community Service Associates, an outreach program providing breakfast, brown bag lunches and full dinner meals. MacMenamin’s Grill & ChefWorks donated the food, chefs and space.  Chefs taught the scouts about the importance of healthy eating and nutrition and assisted them in preparing chicken with vegetables and rice, and healthy homemade lasagna.  The girls had a great time rolling out the pasta! Junior Leagues’Kids in the Kitchen, which launched in the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom in 2006, addresses the staggering statistic that nearly one-third of children and adolescents in North and South America will be overweight by 2010 and at increased risk of contracting Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, the numerous ailments related to high cholesterol and social problems that affect self-esteem.  The goal of this initiative, which is supported by the Association of Junior Leagues International Inc. and its 293 member Leagues, is to raise awareness and attempt to reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues.  The Association-wide program works to educate children and families about childhood obesity, nutrition and healthy lifestyle choices.  For more information about this initiative, please visit TheKids in the Kitchenwebsite athttp://kidsinthekitchen.ajli.org.  Photo #1:Prospect Hill 1st Grade Brownie Troop #1658 Leader Jennifer Dunbar and Sara Veteri.
